The next morning, Savanna got up and went to the bathroom. She assessed the bruises which we're caused by her step father. They didn't look too dark, so she wouldn't need foundation today. She put on eyeliner and mascara. She got ready for school and made breakfast for her mother and step father. She managed to get her step father's (His name is Chris, by the way) coffee done before he came down the stairs. She ate breakfast and went to school.
When Savanna got to school, Ryan was waiting for her at the door. He had quickly become her best friend, her only friend, really. "Hi, Savanna." he said once she reached the door. "Hi." she replied as they walked inside. They went to the patio and sat on a bench. Ryan noticed the light bruises on her face. "Hey, what happened?" he asked. She looked confused. "Huh?" she asked. He looked concerned. "Your face. It's bruised." She became nervous that he had noticed. "It's nothing, just a silly accident." she said, trying to hide it. He gently took her hands, starting to move them so he could get a better look. She tried to pull her hands away. "I told you! It's nothing!" she said, sounding nervous. "Savanna, if it's nothing, you'll let me look at it. Let me see." he said, his tone concerned. She stopped resisting, and he gently placed a hand on her face, tilting her head so he could get a better look. "Savanna," he started, lowering his hand from her face. "Who hit you?" he asked, his tone concerned and a bit scared. "I told you. It was an accident. Nobody hit me." she answered. "Savanna, don't lie to me." he said, starting to get aggravated. "I'm not lying!" she said, shaking a bit. He grabbed her shoulders. "I'm not friggin' stupid! I know a fist mark when I see one! Now stop lying and tell me who the heck hit you!!" He yelled, frustrated. His yelling frightened her and she turned pale; her small, delicate shoulders trembling in his hands. Tears welled up in her eyes and she jerked away from him, darting down a hallway. She didn't like to be yelled at. Yelling terrified her. Chris was always yelling at her when he got mad.
Ryan ran after her. "Savanna! Come back!" he called. He didn't know that he had frightened her. She ran to an empty part of the school. He finally got close enough to catch her and grabbed her arm. She yelped and flinched, immediately falling to her knees and covering her face with her arms, sobbing. She was expecting to be beaten; it was wired into her brain that being beaten was the consequence for upsetting someone. She sobbed loudly and started begging. "Please! Please, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't hit me! Don't beat me, please! PLEASE!!!" she screamed, frightened. Ryan was shocked by this. He knelt down beside her and rubbed her back. She had been expecting a harsh strike from him, and jumped when he touched her. She was whimpering and shaking. He wrapped his arms around her and she clung to him tightly. "I-I'm sorry I made you m-mad..." she said, her voice trembling. "No, don't be sorry. I shouldn't have yelled. Please, please tell me who is beating you." He said. "M-my step father... It's okay though... I-I deserve it..." she said, sounding ashamed. "No, don't you dare say that. Nobody deserves the kind of terror I just saw come from you." he said, rocking her. "Please, don't tell anybody." she said. "But this is serious. You could get hurt. Or worse, killed." he said. He was very concerned for her health. "I'll be fine. Just please, don't tell anyone." she said, practically begging him to keep it a secret. He sighed and said "Alright, but if this gets any worse, I'll have no choice."
